The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reaffirmed its life-saving role on the state’s roads following the rescue of a severely injured victim of a hit-and-run accident along the Ketu–Ojota axis.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend on the busy main carriageway inward Ojota, involved an unidentified driver who reportedly struck the victim and fled the scene, leaving the individual in a critical and helpless state.
LASTMA officials who arrived promptly at the scene immediately took charge, securing the area, controlling traffic, and preventing further danger. The victim was found in a pool of blood with multiple injuries, including serious fractures and a head injury, and was in urgent need of medical attention.
Recognising the severity of the situation, the officers swiftly contacted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS). Emergency responders arrived shortly after and carried out an on-the-spot assessment, expressing concern over the extent of the injuries, which required specialised medical care at a properly equipped facility.
Despite the gravity of the situation, LASTMA personnel remained composed and committed, staying on ground to ensure the victim’s safety while coordinating further emergency interventions. The agency’s response once again highlights its expanding responsibilities, which now include rescue operations and rapid emergency response beyond routine traffic control.
Reacting to the development, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, strongly condemned the actions of the fleeing motorist, describing the act as both irresponsible and inhumane. He stressed that every driver involved in an accident has a duty to stop, provide assistance, and alert emergency services.
According to him, abandoning an injured person at an accident scene could have devastating consequences, especially when timely medical intervention can mean the difference between life and death.
“Fleeing from an accident scene where someone is critically injured is unacceptable. In such moments, every second matters, and motorists must act responsibly by ensuring victims receive immediate help,” he said.
Bakare-Oki also praised the professionalism and bravery of LASTMA officers who handled the incident, reiterating the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and minimising the impact of road accidents across Lagos.
He further appealed to members of the public who may have information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the fleeing driver to assist law enforcement authorities.
The agency also urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations, and avoid reckless driving, noting that responsible road use is key to preventing such tragic incidents.
In addition, residents were encouraged to be more responsive during emergencies by promptly contacting relevant agencies. LASTMA reminded the public of its toll-free emergency line, 3367, stressing that quick reporting can significantly improve response time and save lives.
The authority concluded by emphasising that the preservation of human life must remain the highest priority at all times, calling on all road users to act with greater responsibility and awareness.
