Five people, including four students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna), have died in a fatal road accident involving a vehicle in the convoy of Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago.
The crash occurred on Monday at Gidan Mangoro, near Gidan Kwanu, along the Minna–Bida Road. It involved a Toyota Hilux conveying the Director-General of the Government House, Dauda Chikuba, and a vehicle carrying the students.
Reports indicate that the students and the Government House driver died at the scene, while Chikuba sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
The accident happened as the governor’s convoy was returning to Minna after a condolence visit to the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, following the death of the Sagi Nupe, Hajia Aisha.
An eyewitness described the incident as a head-on collision and alleged that the governor’s convoy was travelling at high speed before the crash. However, the exact cause of the accident has not been independently established.
The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident and said investigations had commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The police have yet to release the identities of the deceased or provide further details about the crash.
The incident has renewed concerns about road safety and the circumstances surrounding accidents involving official convoys. Authorities are expected to establish the cause of the tragedy as investigations continue.
