The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed a viral online publication claiming to be a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in six states ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a public notice issued on Monday, October 12, 2026, and shared on its official X account, @inecnigeria, the commission described the publication as fake, stressing that it did not originate from the electoral body.
The affected states are Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano.
INEC urged Nigerians to disregard the fraudulent notice and refrain from sharing it, warning that the false publication could mislead members of the public about the governorship candidates in the affected states.
The commission clarified that it had not issued any special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states and advised citizens, political stakeholders and other interested parties to obtain electoral information exclusively through its verified communication channels.
These include its official website, www.inecnigeria.org, its X and Instagram handles, @inecnigeria, its Facebook page, INEC Nigeria, and its news portal, www.inecnews.com.
For enquiries and further clarification, the commission provided its call centre number, 0700-2255-4632, short code 4632, and telephone numbers 090844444333 and 09050858629.
The warning comes amid preparations for the 2027 general elections, following the publication of candidate lists that has attracted attention over the reported omission of some expected candidates.
INEC reiterated its commitment to providing accurate and credible electoral information, urging Nigerians to verify political and election-related reports through official sources before sharing them.
