Cristiano Ronaldo Retirement: 2026 Could Be His Final Year

Cristiano Ronaldo retirement plans have come into sharper focus after the Portuguese football star hinted that 2026 could be the final year of his professional career.

The 41-year-old Portugal and Al Nassr forward made the disclosure in an interview with Vogue magazine published on Sunday, reflecting on his 25-year career, the sacrifices he has made and his plans for life after football.

Ronaldo, who has scored more than 950 goals for club and country, said he wants to make the most of his remaining time on the pitch and end his career on a memorable note.

“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” Ronaldo said.

    Cristiano Ronaldo retirement plans

The latest comments are among the clearest indications yet that Ronaldo could be approaching the end of his playing career.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had previously suggested that retirement could come “soon” or within the next one or two years. However, his latest remarks appear to narrow that timeframe, with 2026 now potentially marking the final chapter of his career.

Ronaldo has enjoyed an extraordinary career spanning more than two decades. He has represented some of the biggest clubs in European football, including Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, before moving to Saudi Arabia to play for Al Nassr.

During that time, he has won major domestic and international honours and established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in football history.

    Life after football

Ronaldo also discussed what life could look like after retirement, revealing that he already has several interests that could keep him occupied away from professional football.

He mentioned travelling and playing padel among the activities he enjoys. However, he acknowledged that stepping away from football could leave a significant gap in his daily life because the sport has been such a major part of his existence for decades.

The Portuguese star said he would therefore need to find new ways to stay active and engaged once his playing career comes to an end.

After spending most of his life dedicated to football, retirement would represent a major change for Ronaldo, both professionally and personally.

    A career built on sacrifice

Ronaldo also reflected on the sacrifices that shaped his career and said he now looks forward to enjoying the achievements that came from years of hard work and dedication.

From his early days at Sporting CP to his record-breaking spells at Manchester United and Real Madrid, Ronaldo has built a career defined by extraordinary goalscoring numbers, individual awards and an intense commitment to maintaining his physical condition.

His longevity has allowed him to remain at the highest level well into his 40s, something few players in the history of the sport have achieved.

    What comes next for Ronaldo?

The retirement discussion comes after Ronaldo represented Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Portugal reached the last 16 before its campaign came to an end.

Following the tournament, Ronaldo is expected to return to Saudi Arabia and join Al Nassr as the club prepares for the new Saudi Pro League season.

Although Ronaldo has not announced an exact retirement date, his latest comments have increased speculation that the 2026 season could be his final one as a professional footballer.

For now, he remains focused on his football commitments. However, his comments suggest that he is already thinking seriously about life after the game and the legacy he wants to leave behind.

If 2026 does prove to be the final year of Cristiano Ronaldo’s playing career, it would bring an extraordinary chapter in football history to a close.
