Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has strengthened the state’s emergency response capacity with the induction of 150 newly trained firefighters and the operationalisation of the new Oworonshoki Fire Station, aimed at improving public safety and protecting lives, property, and the environment.
The newly inducted firefighters completed a six-month intensive training programme at the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Technical Training Centre, Ikeja, where they acquired modern firefighting and rescue skills and obtained the Basic Firefighting Competency Certificate (BFCC), qualifying them for active field operations.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, congratulated the recruits and urged them to maintain discipline, professionalism, teamwork, courage, and continuous learning as they commence their field internships.
Adeseye disclosed that the latest recruitment represents the third phase of personnel expansion under the Sanwo-Olu administration. The state recruited 100 firefighters in December 2020 and another 435 in May 2022. With the addition of the 150 firefighters recruited in December 2025, the total number employed under the current administration has risen to 685.
She said the expanded workforce would boost the operational capacity of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and enable faster emergency response across the state.
The Controller General also described the opening of the Oworonshoki Fire Station as another significant step towards expanding emergency response coverage. The new facility brings the number of public fire stations constructed under the Sanwo-Olu administration to 11, alongside another station operated through a Public-Private Partnership with the Startimes Estate Community Development Association.
Adeseye commended the Governor’s continued investment in emergency management, noting that the recruitment of personnel, construction of fire stations, and provision of modern firefighting equipment demonstrate the government’s commitment to creating a safer and more resilient Lagos.
She assured residents that the Fire and Rescue Service would continue to provide prompt, efficient, and proactive emergency response, while strengthening efforts to safeguard lives, property, and the environment across the state.
