Aiyedatiwa Approves 60% Hike in Tertiary Institutions’ Subventions, Implements FG-Union Deal
The Ondo State Government has announced a major financial intervention for state-owned tertiary institutions, with Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa approving a 60 per cent increase in their monthly subventions, effective from August 2026.
The increase is expected to strengthen the institutions’ financial capacity to meet their obligations, sustain salary payments and improve teaching and learning conditions.
In a separate move, Governor Aiyedatiwa has also approved the implementation of the agreement reached between the Federal Government and university-based unions across relevant state-owned tertiary institutions.
The measure is aimed at addressing outstanding welfare concerns affecting both academic and non-academic staff, boosting workers’ morale and promoting stability across the institutions.
The governor directed the management of the affected institutions to ensure that the additional funds are used responsibly, with priority given to staff welfare, academic development and the effective administration of the institutions.
He also called on the unions to reciprocate the government’s intervention by maintaining industrial harmony and ensuring that academic activities continue without disruption.
The latest decisions come amid concerns over industrial disputes and funding challenges in the tertiary education sector. According to the Ondo State Government, the interventions are part of the Aiyedatiwa administration’s broader efforts to strengthen tertiary education and improve the quality of learning across the state.
