The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Eid el Maulud, the annual celebration marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
According to the Federal Government, the holiday will allow Muslims across Nigeria to observe the religious occasion and participate in activities marking the birth of the Islamic prophet.
Tunji-Ojo extended greetings to Muslim faithful in Nigeria and those living abroad, urging citizens to reflect on the values associated with the Prophet Muhammad, including compassion, humility, peaceful coexistence and service to others.
The minister also called on Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and greater national cohesion, stressing that peaceful coexistence and national unity require the collective contribution of citizens regardless of their religious or social backgrounds.
He urged Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and respect people of different beliefs, while wishing the Muslim community a peaceful and joyful Eid el Maulud.
The minister further assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace across the country.
