The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has dismissed reports alleging irregularities in the administration of the N1 billion Disability Intervention Fund, reaffirming its commitment to transparency, accountability and the welfare of persons with disabilities in the state.
In a statement, LASODA acknowledged the media’s role in promoting accountability and sympathised with families featured in the reports, noting that their experiences highlight the importance of ensuring government support reaches those who need it most.
Addressing allegations that some officials demanded kickbacks before processing intervention requests, the agency said it had received no formal complaint or documented allegation before the publication of the report. It explained that the first information came through an anonymous WhatsApp message, after which it immediately launched an internal fact-finding exercise. LASODA said a suspected officer was identified and the matter was referred to the appropriate authorities in line with the Lagos State Public Service disciplinary procedures. It, however, clarified that no disciplinary process has been concluded, as the case is still subject to review by the relevant Personnel Management Board and the Lagos State Civil Service Commission.
The agency also denied claims that organisations were blacklisted for refusing to pay kickbacks, explaining that while it maintains a large register of disability-focused organisations, financial support is allocated based on programme priorities, available resources and assessment processes. It stressed that not receiving funding in a particular cycle does not amount to blacklisting.
LASODA further clarified that comments credited to Dr. Adebukola Adebayo were made during his previous tenure as Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Lagos State Chapter, and not under the current administration.
The Office said it would continue to strengthen transparency through improved stakeholder engagement, enhanced reporting systems and greater digitisation of its intervention processes. It also encouraged individuals and organisations with credible evidence of misconduct by any official to report such cases through the appropriate channels for investigation.
LASODA reaffirmed that the N1 billion Disability Intervention Fund, approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, remains dedicated to promoting inclusion, economic empowerment, accessibility and improved welfare for persons with disabilities, pledging to administer the fund with fairness, integrity and accountability.
