The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Prof. Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the institution’s 14th Vice-Chancellor following a competitive selection process involving eight candidates.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Adebisi Akande, after the council approved the recommendation of the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board. Akande said the appointment process was conducted in line with the University Act ahead of the expiration of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor’s tenure on November 1, 2026.
He explained that applications were invited through advertisements published in three national newspapers in April 2026, attracting six applicants. A Search Team later identified two additional qualified candidates, bringing the total to eight.
Following an assessment by the Governing Council, five candidates were shortlisted based on merit and interviewed by the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, which recommended Olapegba as the most qualified candidate. Akande described the exercise as thorough, transparent and highly competitive, noting that the Governing Council unanimously approved the recommendation.
Prof. Olapegba, the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and a Professor of Psychology at the University of Ibadan, will succeed the outgoing Vice-Chancellor when the current administration ends on November 1, 2026.
