The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, with 1,200,514 candidates (61.54%) obtaining at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics. According to the Head of WAEC Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, this represents a 1.42% decline compared to the 2025 performance.
A total of 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 schools across Nigeria, Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea registered for the examination, while 1,950,726 sat for the exam. Overall, 1,687,378 candidates (86.50%) earned at least five credits with or without English and Mathematics. Of those who met the benchmark including English and Mathematics, 558,883 were male and 641,631 were female, while the total number of candidates who sat for the examination comprised 953,459 males and 997,267 females.
Dr. Dangut disclosed that 94.05% of candidates have had their results processed and released, while the results of 116,031 candidates (5.95%) are still being processed. He also noted that 1,213 candidates with special needs participated in the examination, including candidates with visual, hearing, physical, and other disabilities.
WAEC withheld the results of 167,486 candidates (8.59%) over alleged examination malpractice, a decrease from 9.7% in 2025. The Council attributed many of the malpractice cases to the use of mobile phones in examination halls and organised cheating in some schools, adding that supervisors and invigilators found aiding malpractice have been apprehended and will face sanctions.
Dr. Dangut, who said this was his final media briefing as Head of WAEC Nigeria, highlighted key innovations introduced for the examination, including the Digital Examiner Marking System (DEMS) for faster result processing, the serialisation of question papers to curb malpractice, and a new portal that allows candidates to generate e-PINs directly to check their results.Category: Education
