Lionel Messi has ended his illustrious international career with Argentina at the age of 39, bringing more than two decades of service to the national team to a close.
Messi confirmed his decision on Monday after Argentina’s 1–0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The defeat, sealed by Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal, marked the final international appearance of the Argentine captain, who had hoped to win another World Cup.
Since making his senior debut in 2005, Messi recorded 207 appearances and 125 goals, becoming Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer. His decorated international career includes Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2022 Finalissima.
His decision was also influenced by the death of his father, Jorge Messi, who died on August 8 following a prolonged illness. Jorge played a significant role in Messi’s football journey and previously served as his agent.
Messi revealed that he had drafted his retirement message shortly after the World Cup final, but his father’s passing strengthened his decision to step away. Describing the move as painful, he said he believed it was time for a new generation of Argentine players to take responsibility.
The legendary forward thanked his family, teammates, coaches and supporters for their unwavering love and support throughout his international career. He said he would now support Argentina from outside the pitch.
Although Messi leaves international football without another World Cup triumph, he departs as one of the greatest players in international football history, having won every major international honour available to him.
