Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the implementation of improved allowances and payment of arrears for staff of the state’s three universities.
The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
The approval followed an agreement with the four unions representing workers in the institutions — the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
Under the new arrangement, academic staff will receive a 40 per cent Consolidated Academic Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CATA) and a 10 per cent Earned Academic Allowance (EAA). Monthly allowances of ₦70,000 for Readers and ₦145,000 for Professors were also approved.
For non-academic staff, the governor approved a 35 per cent revised allowance across Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions.
The approved allowances are tax-free and take effect from January 1, 2026, with arrears to be paid in two tranches alongside the October and November 2026 salaries.
The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, conveyed the approval in a letter dated October 7, 2026, while relevant government agencies were directed to commence implementation in line with existing financial regulations.
Sanwo-Olu also appealed to the four unions to suspend their ongoing strike and direct their members to resume work, following the disruption of academic and administrative activities at the three universities.
The governor thanked the unions for their patience during negotiations and urged all parties to maintain industrial peace and ensure the smooth running of the institutions.
