The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has recorded significant achievements in consumer protection, complaint resolution and regulatory enforcement in the six years since Afolabi Solebo, Esq., was appointed General Manager/Chief Executive Officer by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on November 5, 2020.
Under Solebo’s leadership, the Agency has secured consumer redress worth ₦759,354,292.60 and $14,901.80, while resolving 10,720 out of 11,120 complaints received across various sectors. Another 250 complaints are undergoing mediation, while 150 have been referred to other relevant state government agencies.
To improve accessibility, LASCOPA established and strengthened eight annex offices in Agege, Badagry, Epe, Ikorodu, Ojo, Bariga, Ikoyi-Obalende and Isolo. The offices are equipped with operational facilities, including public address systems and mobile devices, to bring complaint management, mediation and consumer education closer to residents. The Agency is also engaging local governments to secure additional office accommodation ahead of 2027.
In strengthening consumer awareness, LASCOPA has expanded public enlightenment through radio and television programmes, community engagements, stakeholder meetings and social media campaigns. These initiatives educate residents on their rights to safety, accurate information, fair value, freedom of choice and redress, while discouraging the purchase of counterfeit and expired products, deceptive advertising and hidden charges. Consumers are also encouraged to demand receipts and verify product labels before making purchases.
The Agency has equally intensified market surveillance and enforcement, issuing 437 notices of non-compliance to supermarkets and retail outlets following inspections across Lagos State’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas. The violations include inadequate price disclosure, misleading product labelling and failure to provide essential product information.
These enforcement activities are guided by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Law 2025 (as amended) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018. Its “No Price Tag, No Sales” campaign has further promoted pricing transparency and fair-trading practices.
As part of efforts to strengthen institutional collaboration, LASCOPA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) in Abuja on April 21, 2026. The agreement provides a framework for information sharing, joint consumer interventions and coordinated enforcement between state and federal consumer protection agencies.
The Agency also recorded improved revenue performance, generating over ₦20 million between January and September 2026, exceeding its annual revenue target of ₦10 million by more than 100 per cent.
Beyond these achievements, LASCOPA continues to partner with government institutions, development organisations, civil society groups and scientific laboratories to improve product research, verification and consumer safety. It also conducts unscheduled inspections of manufacturing facilities across the state to ensure compliance with relevant standards and consumer protection regulations.
Residents seeking assistance with consumer complaints and mediation can access the Agency’s services through its toll-free helpline: 080 0005 2726.
The achievements reflect the Agency’s continued efforts under Solebo’s leadership to promote a fair, transparent and accountable marketplace while protecting the rights and interests of consumers across Lagos State.
