Benin Republic’s President, Romuald Wadagni, has announced a major reshuffle of the country’s military leadership, nearly a year after a failed coup attempt and amid growing security threats in the northern region.
The military shake-up comes after Beninese soldiers, with support from France and Nigeria, foiled an attempted coup in December 2025 against former President Patrice Talon. At the time, Talon confirmed that the situation was under control following the intervention of loyalist troops.
Wadagni, who previously served as the country’s Minister of Economy for 10 years, became president in April 2026 after succeeding Talon. He announced the latest appointments on Wednesday, naming General Abou Issa as the new Chief of the Armed Forces, replacing General Fructueux Gbaguidi, who has been reassigned as Permanent Secretary of the National Defence and Security Council.
Other appointments include Colonel Andre Dokoui Fofo as head of the Army, Colonel Herve Setondji Allotchenou as head of the Air Force, and Captain Dossa Hounkpatin as head of the Navy.
The leadership changes come as Benin faces increasing jihadist attacks in its northern territories, particularly along its borders with Burkina Faso and Niger, where fighters linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have intensified their activities.
The security challenges have also been compounded by strained diplomatic relations with neighbouring Sahel countries, currently governed by military juntas that are suspicious of Benin’s close relationship with France.
The reshuffle is seen against the backdrop of the country’s efforts to strengthen its military structure and address growing security concerns.
