The United States Embassy in Abuja has discontinued routine visa processing at the capital, directing applicants to the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos for regular visa services.
The adjustment, which took effect on August 1, 2026, is said to be put in place for intended strengthen security screening and improve the efficiency of visa processing by the US department.
Applicants who had previously secured appointments in Abuja are expected to receive updates regarding their appointments, with some potentially being rescheduled. Those affected have been advised to monitor their emails for further information.
Applicants with valid, unused Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fee receipts can also use them to book appointments in Lagos.
This development does not lead to a visa ban on Nigerians, nor does it mean the U.S. Embassy in Abuja has been shut down. The change only affects routine visa processing, which would now be carried out in Lagos.
