The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) traditional khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric as part of a wide-ranging reform of the scheme.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the plan during an interview on Channels Television, explaining that the move is aimed at promoting Nigeria’s textile industry and ensuring government spending supports local manufacturers.
As part of the reforms, corps members will also be posted based on their academic qualifications and professional skills. For instance, education graduates will be deployed to schools, making postings more relevant and impactful.
The government is equally considering posting corps members to regions where they studied or are already familiar with, especially in areas facing security challenges. However, those who wish to serve in other parts of the country will still have the option to indicate their interest.
Olawande dismissed reports that the military would be removed from the NYSC, clarifying that while the scheme’s operational leadership will be headed by a civilian, the military will continue to provide security support nationwide.
The reforms follow the approval of a comprehensive overhaul of the NYSC by the Federal Executive Council—the first major review of the scheme since its establishment in 1973. The council has also directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to amend the NYSC Act to implement the new changes
