The 2026 Fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA), under Team U.P.G.R.A.D.E. (Unlocking Potential through Growth, Research and Applied Digital Education), have commissioned a solar-powered digital learning hub and remodeled library in Kosofe, Lagos, as part of efforts to bridge the digital divide and improve access to quality education.
The initiative transformed an underutilized public school library into a modern learning centre featuring a fully equipped ICT laboratory with 50 laptops, a refurbished library, and a structured Book Reading Club. Powered by a solar-inverter system, the hub also includes offline Computer-Based Test (CBT) simulation software to help students prepare for WAEC and JAMB examinations without internet access.
The project was unveiled during a two-day programme that began with a tree-planting exercise, a student debate competition, and the official commissioning of the facility. The second day focused on a teachers’ conference, where educators received training on integrating digital tools into classroom teaching, managing modern learning spaces, and adopting student-centred teaching methods.
Designed to address declining reading culture and limited digital literacy among public school students, the hub is expected to benefit 150 to 300 students annually, with priority given to candidates preparing for the 2026/2027 WAEC and JAMB examinations.
The launch attracted key stakeholders, including the General Manager of the Lagos State Ferry Services, Mr. AbdulBaki Ladi Balogun; the Executive Secretary of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade; and former Agboyi-Ketu LCDA Chairman, Mayor Dele Osinowo. Representatives from the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Education District II, school administrators, community leaders, and students were also in attendance.
Impressed by the project’s impact, Mayor Osinowo pledged additional funding to expand the facility’s capacity, while other public and private sector partners also committed support towards its long-term sustainability.
Speaking at the event, Team Lead Titilope Anifowoshe said the project reflects the commitment of young leaders to give back to society, while appreciating Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat for investing in leadership development through the academy.
To ensure sustainability, Team U.P.G.R.A.D.E. signed maintenance and management agreements with the school’s Parent-Teacher Association, alumni association, and education district officials for regular technical support, facility maintenance, and security.
The team described the Kosofe project as the pilot phase of a broader plan to replicate the model across Lagos State. Future initiatives will include expanding Book Reading Clubs in secondary schools, advocating for more community and school libraries, delivering soft skills training, and promoting academic excellence, ethical leadership, and personal development among students.
