Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed the state’s readiness to host the inaugural National Intermediate Sports Festival, scheduled to take place from October 1 to 15, 2026.
Sanwo-Olu said Lagos accepted the hosting rights after they were awarded to the state by the National Sports Commission, describing the festival as a major opportunity to strengthen grassroots sports development and encourage young athletes to build their careers in Nigeria.
An estimated 14,000 to 15,000 athletes are expected to participate, with venues including Rowe Park and other sports facilities across the state. The Governor made this known on Saturday while inspecting ongoing rehabilitation works at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.
During the inspection, Sanwo-Olu toured the main football and athletics arenas, indoor sports hall, volleyball court and swimming pool. He explained that the rehabilitation of sports facilities across Lagos forms part of a broader programme launched by his administration about three years ago to upgrade sporting infrastructure in Surulere, Ifako, Bariga, Ikorodu, Epe, Agege, Badagry and other areas.
At Teslim Balogun Stadium, the main bowl is undergoing extensive reconstruction, while the football pitch has been upgraded to FIFA standards with natural grass already installed. The tartan track is expected to be completed within the next four to six weeks, while work on the swimming pool and other outstanding facilities is also expected to be completed within the set timeframe.
The Governor expressed confidence that Teslim Balogun Stadium and the other venues would be ready and meet international standards before the October festival. He said the hosting opportunity has increased the urgency to complete the ongoing projects.
Sanwo-Olu described the festival as a platform for young athletes to discover, develop and refine their talents before progressing to elite sports. He said Lagos would use the event to strengthen grassroots sports and create opportunities for children to develop their potential without feeling the need to leave the country.
The Governor said Lagos was proud to become the first state to host the National Intermediate Sports Festival and pledged the state’s commitment to delivering a successful maiden edition.
