Converging from The Secretariat, Alausa, in numbers, Pensioners in Lagos State have staged a protest at Lagos House, Ikeja, demanding the implementation of pension increases, and payment of outstanding payments owed to retirees.
The protesters, under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), had earlier issued an August 31 ultimatum to the Lagos State Government to address their complaints.
The pensioners are particularly demanding the implementation of an increase, also the payment of outstanding arrears.
The protest followed weeks of complaints with relevant government authorities. The retirees had maintained that despite previous assurances, their demands had not been fulfilled.
The demonstration has escalated as security operatives fired tear gas at the protesters at Lagos House.
The pensioners have continued to call on the state government to urgently intervene, as they keep pressing for their voices to be heard.
