The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has issued a directive prohibiting serving members of the Nigeria Police Force from engaging in unauthorized social media activities, including skit-making, content creation, live streaming, and monetized online engagements.
Under the new policy, officers are barred from posting videos, hosting live broadcasts, or endorsing brands on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and other social media channels while in uniform or identifying themselves as police personnel.
Officers currently operating police-affiliated social media accounts have been given 14 days to either deactivate the accounts or remove all references linking them to the Force.
Police authorities stated that the directive is aimed at preserving institutional discipline, professionalism, and public confidence in the Force. They warned that officers who violate the policy could face disciplinary measures, including salary forfeiture, demotion, dismissal from service, and possible prosecution under cybercrime laws.
The directive also places responsibility on senior officers and unit commanders, who may be sanctioned for failing to detect, report, or prevent violations within their commands
