Presidential candidates and representatives of political parties have signed the first National Peace Accord for the 2027 general elections in Abuja, pledging to promote peaceful campaigns.
The accord was signed on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, ahead of the commencement of campaigns. Among those who signed were President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi, Omoyele Sowore, alongside representatives of other political parties.
The signatories pledged to reject electoral violence, hate speech, personal attacks, and misinformation, while committing to respect the electoral process and promote national unity.
They also agreed to address electoral grievances through lawful channels and avoid actions capable of spreading political tension before, during and after the elections.
The accord was facilitated by the National Peace Committee, chaired by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, as part of efforts to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
