Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has called for greater transparency, accountability and stronger oversight in the handling of Nigeria’s proposed 2026 federal budget amid growing controversy over alleged irregularities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Frank said the ongoing debate surrounding the budget has intensified public scrutiny of government spending and highlighted the need for institutions responsible for managing public finances to uphold openness and accountability. He urged the Federal Government to strengthen accountability measures to restore public confidence and ensure prudent management of national resources.
He described the allegations of inflated budget allocations, fictitious projects and questionable expenditures as issues that have raised fresh concerns about the credibility of the budgeting process.
Frank also urged the National Assembly to fully carry out its constitutional duty of scrutinising government spending and providing effective oversight of the executive. According to him, the widespread perception that lawmakers have become overly accommodating to the executive weakens democratic institutions and erodes public trust.
He further encouraged Nigerians to demand accountability, defend democratic institutions and exercise their constitutional right to vote for leaders who will promote integrity, competence and genuine public service.
His remarks come as the proposed 2026 federal budget faces increasing public criticism over claims of inflated allocations, duplicated budget items and questionable projects. The controversy has prompted renewed calls from opposition figures, civil society groups and governance advocates for a more transparent budgeting process and stricter legislative oversight.
The federal budget remains the government’s key fiscal policy document, outlining expected revenue and planned expenditure for the year. Experts have consistently stressed that transparency and integrity in budget preparation and implementation are essential for fiscal discipline, efficient service delivery and maintaining public trust.
