The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the Osun State election, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, has appealed for calm as voting continues across the state.
Oyebamiji made the call after casting his ballot, as concerns over possible violence emerged in some parts of the state.
The APC candidate was also asked to comment on the reported arrest of a lawmaker in the build-up to the election over alleged possession of security-related equipment.
Responding to questions about reports of possible violence later in the day, Oyebamiji declined to speculate, saying security authorities were responsible for assessing the situation and taking appropriate action.
“I think the security authorities are the ones that would do that,” he said.
His comments came as voters continued to turn out at polling units across the 30 local government areas of Osun State to exercise their franchise.
The election is a closely contested race involving the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oyebamiji of the APC, Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and other candidates.
With security remaining a key concern during the election, stakeholders have continued to urge voters, political parties and their supporters to maintain peace and allow the electoral process to proceed without intimidation or violence.
