LAGOS CALLS FOR MEANINGFUL CLIMATE FINANCING AT BERLIN CLIMATE MOBILITY FORUM 2026

The Lagos State Government has called on developed nations and international institutions to move beyond rhetoric and provide meaningful climate financing to support vulnerable regions facing the growing impacts of climate change.

Speaking at the 2nd Berlin Climate Mobility Forum 2026, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, made the call during a panel discussion focused on the challenges posed by rising sea levels and climate-induced displacement.

Wahab noted that the climate crisis is a global challenge that transcends national borders and poses an existential threat to coastal cities around the world. He stressed that while Lagos remains committed to leading adaptation and resilience efforts, the scale of the challenge requires collective international action.

According to the Commissioner, cities in the Global South, which bear a disproportionate burden of climate impacts despite contributing the least to global emissions, need increased access to climate financing and technical support to effectively respond to emerging threats.

“Lagos is ready to lead adaptation efforts, but we cannot do it alone. The international community must move from promises to action by providing localized funding, fostering direct partnerships, and facilitating the transfer of knowledge and technology needed to build resilient communities,” he said.

Wahab further emphasized the importance of supporting vulnerable regions with innovative solutions, including advanced flood modeling systems, coastal engineering technologies, and sustainable infrastructure investments to mitigate the effects of rising sea levels.

The Commissioner reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to implementing climate adaptation strategies and collaborating with global partners to safeguard lives, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure.

He urged stakeholders across governments, international organizations, and the private sector to work together in addressing the climate crisis and ensuring that frontline communities receive the support required to build resilience against future climate shocks.

The Berlin Climate Mobility Forum serves as a global platform for dialogue on climate change, human mobility, and sustainable solutions for communities at risk from environmental challenges.
