NFF Sacks Super Falcons Technical Crew After World Cup Failure

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ordered the technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down from their positions with immediate effect following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The decision was announced by the football governing body on Monday, August 17, 2026, coming just four days after Nigeria suffered a 2–1 defeat to South Africa in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) play-off in Morocco.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of securing a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and brought an end to the Super Falcons’ remarkable record of qualifying for every edition of the women’s tournament since its inception in 1991.

The NFF, in a brief statement, directed members of the technical crew led by Justine Madugu to leave their positions immediately.

The development followed growing concerns over the team’s performance in Morocco, particularly after the Falcons failed to capitalise on several scoring opportunities in their decisive encounter with South Africa.

Before the NFF announced the decision, Madugu had apologised to Nigerians and accepted responsibility for the team’s disappointing campaign.

He admitted that although the players and coaching staff gave their best, their efforts were not enough to secure the desired result.

Nigeria had been handed another opportunity to qualify for the World Cup after losing 1–0 to Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-finals. However, the Super Falcons were unable to overcome South Africa in the subsequent play-off.

South Africa took control of the encounter after Thembi Kgatlana opened the scoring in the 56th minute. Refiloe Jane later doubled the advantage 21 minutes after the opening goal, putting the South Africans in a strong position.

Nigeria managed to reduce the deficit late in the game after a VAR review resulted in the award of a penalty. Christy Ucheibe converted from the spot during stoppage time, while Jane was sent off following the review.

Despite their late pressure, the Super Falcons could not find the equaliser as South Africa held on to secure victory and progress to the intercontinental play-off.

Reflecting on the defeat, Madugu identified poor finishing and defensive mistakes as major factors behind Nigeria’s failure.

He acknowledged that the team created opportunities but struggled to convert them, while mistakes at the back allowed South Africa to punish them.

    NFF Sets Up Fact-Finding Committee

Following the disappointing result, the NFF has also established a six-member Fact-finding Committee to investigate the recent poor performances of Nigeria’s national teams, with particular attention to the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau charged the committee with investigating both the immediate and underlying factors responsible for the setbacks and recommending measures that could prevent a recurrence.

The committee has been given two weeks to submit its report.

Former NFF General Secretary, Fanny Amun, will serve as chairman, while former Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie, ex-Super Eagles captain Mutiu Adepoju, former Flying Eagles coach Ladan Bosso, former FIFA referee Alex Mana and former Nigeria international Nasiru Jibril, who will serve as secretary, are members.

Amun said the committee would consult relevant stakeholders and consider submissions from members of the public before presenting its findings to the federation.

The NFF’s decision to remove the technical crew marks a significant response to Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2027 World Cup and comes as the federation begins efforts to examine the wider challenges affecting the country’s national football teams.
